Is Homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?

The question alone ought to be enough to give Evangelicals pause. Admittedly, the authors reserve "homophobia" for fear of homosexuals and not merely dislike and disapproval.

Is Homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?

In making homosexuality and disapproval of homosexuality such a strong part of who and what they are, homosexuality is presented as the strongest form of rebellion and repudiation of evangelical Christianity. Further, the suspicion arises of why should being gay be such an issue for these people. Are they hiding something? Do they engage in private orgies? Do they need homosexuals so that they will feel themselves sufficiently Christian by having people to look down on? The latter is suspiciously similar to the well known Christian vice of pride.

You might like to read my article on the myth that all atheists are gays. I include a section on the possible link between homophobia and arousal from homoerotic imagery.

  2. Alan,

I gave your article on the myth that all atheists are gays a quick read.

That's one I never heard before.

One of the on-again-off-again themes that comes up in my blog is how Christians need an out-group in order to construct their identity. They need an "enemy" in order to maintain group cohesion. Nietzsche called it "ressentiment."

Christians need sinners in order to feel close to God.

And so, if by some miracle a 100% perfect never-fail "cure" for homosexuality were invented, Christians would need/invent some other out-group for maintenance a sense of godliness and righteousness in their rank and file.

I think that would be muslims but since when has Christianity ever had trouble finding an enemy? The whole religion is based on the idea that they're right and everyone else is wrong. If all else fails they can always revert to hating money again now that socialism isn't using that anymore. At least that would give us fags a break.
